Is the BC Divorce Rate on the Rise?

Every society deals with soured marriages through systems that are unique to that country. In Canada, as in other societies divorce is the escape mechanism to dissolve a relationship it had solemnized during the wedding. The BC divorce laws require that any one of the three conditions is satisfied for a couple to be divorced. These are very simple conditions. One is that the couple has lived separately for the past one year. The second necessity is that there has been cheating in the marriage. The third condition is that either spouse subjected to cruelty either physical or mental. In 1968, these relaxed Canadian divorce laws were established. As getting a divorce was very easy after the new divorce laws came into effect, there was a substantial increase in the number of divorces.

Recent studies researching the reasons for the rising divorce rates have revealed the causes and the consequences today’s nation is facing because of the divorce laws. The studies do accept that out of every two marriages one falls apart but tries to explain that the reason is not as easy as that.

The overall statistics places the Canadian divorce rates at thirty eight percent assuming the newly married couples will remain married for a minimum of thirty years for the whole country and over forty eight and a half percent only in Quebec. Comparatively, United States has a forty four percent divorce rate. These statistics include persons who are divorcing for the second time as well as the first-time divorcees. As a matter of fact, some studies have shown that in almost sixteen percent of divorces the husbands had already been divorced once before, while the fifteen percent of the wives were divorce at least once before.

While analysts and sociologists argue about the accuracy of the studies and the sample groups used to conduct the study, the fact that there is a high incidence of divorce over the previous decades in Canada cannot be denied. One needs to find answers to the reasons why the Canadian divorce statistics are rising.

The first reason appears to be the relaxed laws that are presently in force. Secondly, the growing economic independence of women appears to equip them with a trading power and they opt for the easier option of separating from the present husband who could be overbearing and demanding. Given the work pressures, it is indeed becoming increasingly difficult for the mother or the wife only to act the role of subservient home-makers and nurturers of families. When women are able to be equal partners on the workforce, the role of men too needs to undergo a metamorphosis and meet her half-way to make marriage the mainstay of society.

Once the cause is identified, we need now look at how we can resolve these relationship conflicts as well as revisit the traditional roles of a husband and wife. The sociologist studied the traditions and evolution of the Canadian society found that the modern Canadian life lacked a few fundamental societal institutions. They suggest that the first step to stemming the rising divorce rates is that Canadians need to go back to the Christian families’ values and bring back patience, giving and forgiving into their lives then there could hopefully be a downward trend in the current BC divorce rates.
